30 Day Anime Challenge Day 30

Anime you wish hadn't ended and continued its awesomeness

I think the first one for me was Azumanga Daioh. That anime was so awesome, I wished it would never end. Ah well, all good things must eventually come to an end, and with that, so has this 30 day challenge.

Anime Challenge Day 29

Favorite School Uniform

I think I'd choose the school uniform from Ohtori Academy in the Utena movie. It's hard to find screencaps.

Anime Challenge Day 28

Favorite Pokemon

I don't really watch/play Pokemon, so I'm just going to have to go with my favorite Pokemon in terms of aesthetics, and that's Umbreon.

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 27

GAH! I got behind thanks to not having the copious amount of free time I had when I was working at Home Depot. TT^TT

Anyway, today is: Favorite anime ending theme song

It's hard for me to choose. I don't really watch endings, since I'm binging usually and excited to get on to the next episode, but I'll go with

Videos in the cutCollapse )

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 26

Favorite anime theme song

As usual, I can't choose just one. Anime theme songs are always so, so awesome.

1. Rinbu Revolution - Utena theme song

2. Love Will Leave You Crying - Tenchi Universe/Tenchi TV (I do actually like the English version better XD)

3. Shell - Witch Hunter Robin

4. Tank - Cowboy Bebop (because any anime opening list is incomplete without it.)

5. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

6. Moon Pride - Sailor Moon Crystal

6. Born - D'Eon

7. Kuchiburu Daydream - Strawberry Panic! 2nd opening

These aren't necessarily in any order, btw XD

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 25

Best anime villain

Ohtori Akio and not just because he's rich and drives a fast car.
spoilers for the whole last third of Shoujo Kakumei UtenaCollapse )

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 24

Favorite Anime Hero or Heroine

I have a feeling most people would say Goku, Spike Spiegel, Alucard (anti-hero, but still), or Vash the Stampede (if you, like me, are stuck in the anime of the 90s). They're all great heroes, don't get me wrong, but I'm going to do something a little different. My favorite anime hero(ine) is:

Tenjou Utena. Here's why. She's a girl that fights gender norms, not only by cross-dressing, but also by keeping her hair long and being otherwise pretty feminine despite her enjoyment of sports. (She collects rose tea cups, for Christ's sake.) She's a girl who wants to be a Prince who saves Princesses.

That's only on the surface though.

The thing that I think makes Utena special is that she's willing to sacrifice everything for people that she really barely knows. She preserves her own noble heart in the face of all these people who would shove their cynisism on her. She refuses to be sullied by the imperfections of the real world and holds on to her pure heart, but she grows up in the process, refusing to give up her belief in miracles and the idea that everyone should have their own prince. She sees some nasty shit in the course of the series. Like, all these truly psychopathic, messed up people, but she holds on to her ideals and values.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena is a metaphor from the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The people around her, in their transition from adolescence to adulthood, experience truly tragic things, and they become jaded by it. Utena also experienced a very tragic thing, but she chose not to let it make her jaded.

That's what I like about Utena. She's not as naive as she appears. She just refuses to let go of her ideals, even in the face of growing up.

And in my own true style, I have a second favorite heroine because, fuck choosing one.

The second one is:

Sailor Moon. For... pretty similar reasons to why I chose Utena.

Sailor Moon fights for love and justice. She is friends with everyone. Sailor Moon even turns enemies into friends, because she always looks for the good in people. She doesn't believe that some sacrifices are necessary. She will save everyone if it's in her power to do so. (And it is, because she's fucking Jesus.) Even if the person she's trying to save is supposed to destroy the world.
...Yes, I'm a hopeless optimist. Why do you ask?

Also, Sailor Moon was one of the first really good rolemodels for young girls. At its core, the whole show is about accepting people for who they are. They have lesbians and transvestites, and guess what? They're heroes. No one even bats an eyelash at Haruka and Michiru being a lesbian couple. And... the Sailor Starlights. In fact, Usagi crushes on a guy that turns into a girl. And she's cool with it.

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 23

Anime you think had the best, or most interesting art

Actually, I think that's an impossible question to answer. An anime's art style is integral to the anime itself, so even if the art wasn't "good," that's the art that portrays the show.

For example, the art in Shoujo Kakumei Utena wasn't exactly stellar. In fact, you can tell that it was pretty low-budget up until the Apocalypse arc, and even then, they chose specific scenes to spend their money on. The promotional artwork is way better than the actual artwork you see in the show, but the art is actually insignificant because the story was the good thing about SKU.

So I can say that Sailor Moon Crystal had fabulous, polished artwork, but even if they animated it in the same style as the original anime, it would still be superior because the story is far superior to that of the original anime. It only helps that they also upgraded the art.

Although, I guess the question isn't asking me to say that the anime is superior because it has good artwork...

I liked the art in Sailor Moon Crystal, ReLIFE, Knights of Sidonia, and Witch Hunter Robin, but I honestly think that the story is the thing you really need to look at. The style of the artwork was chosen to reflect the story. Honestly, the story, the music, and the characters stick with me more than the art does.

I'm reading way too much into this.

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 22

Favorite animal side kick, pet or summoning from any anime

Obviously, I have to say:

Ryo-ohki from Tenchi Muyo! She's so adorable. I used to doodle Ryo-chans and carrots all over everything.
